VBS
Vienna Bilingual Schooling
Goal
The aim of the “Bilingual Elementary School - Vienna Bilingual Primary School” school experiment is to anchor both German and English as the working language in the classroom. For all children, regardless of their learning group or their first language (German or English), the foundations are made to enable them to successfully switch to a higher school .
Implementation
The acquisition of language skills (“German, Reading, Writing” or “English, Reading, Writing”) takes place in the first language, as well as in “German as a second language” or “English as a second language” in separate language groups. All others Subjects are taught at least partially in the two languages German and English in the form of team teaching. This primary school education, following the Austrian curriculum, is taught in the respective first language (German or English). The beginning of the acquisition of the second language in the skill areas Reading and VBS VS model (description 2018 Europa Büro, SSR for Vienna 2018) is done individually and depends on the current level in the first language. This will occur at the latest from the 2nd grade, depending on the differentiated learning pace of the students.
Assessment
In the first and second school years assessment of the children is in the form of an alternative performance description such as "Commented direct performance template" ( known as KDL), learning progress documentation (LFD) or workbook / study book. In the fourth grade, all pupils in a VBS class - regardless of their first language - write formal tests on the compulsory subject “German, reading, writing”. There is also the option of doing formal tests in the VBS compulsory subject English - provided that the responsible teacher (s) has made a corresponding request in the class forum and there is no additional burden for the students. The total number of six "language formal tests "must therefore not be exceeded under any circumstances. At least three of these language school assignments must be carried out in the compulsory subject" German, reading, writing ".
Registration Procedure
A special enrollment procedure is used for VBS schools, which also includes an orientation talk with the child. Of course, during this orientation discussion, only a selective impression can be obtained. This fact is taken into account when decisions about the child's eligibility are made. The results are then communicated electronically to the legal guardians. The determination of school readiness is exclusively the responsibility of the respective school management. For quality assurance and the continuation of the VBS school experiment, it is of importance that the ratio of predominantly English-speaking and predominantly German-speaking children in each class is as balanced as possible. Only in this way can bilingual learning take place successfully.
